Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site Day Trip
This activity is offered to Sederkloof Lodge guests who stay three nights or longer (please visit our Specials page). We drive east into the wilderness area. The route takes us past active farms where ostrich, Angora goats and seed are still being produced. Approximately 25 km east, signs of human activity cease, and the view that remains is one of untouched natural beauty. Mountains that stretch as far as the eye can see. Rivers cross the road, and buffalo, rhino, eland and bushbuck can be encountered. You have entered the Wilderness area, a proclaimed World Heritage site of unsurpassed magnificence.
We pass Geelhoutbos on the road that leads visitors to the other side of the mountains towards Patensie. Steep and dramatic mountain passes, deep river valleys and abundant wildlife makes this a nature lover’s dream. There are picnic sites on the way: Smitskraal, Rooihoek and Doodsklip. Rooihoek and Doodsklip have white sandy beaches, and are situated on the banks of the Kouga River. Visitors are advised to be careful when evacuating their vehicles here, as there are rhino and buffalo that inhabit the area.
The Wilderness Area is managed by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, whose access regulations may vary according to road and flooding conditions. Please obtain the latest information from them shortly before departure if you are driving this road by yourself. A 4x4 vehicle is the standard requirement.
